WMSC Weltmeisterschaft 2015

Beitrag von Boris »

Hi,

Was sagt ihr dazu?

Hello everyone and Good Luck to Boris and to everyone participating to the WMC-2015.

As we all know, Germany is the clear favourite to win WMC-2015; both the overall WMC trophy and the total team points (best team award).

But I am not sure about the condition of the Chinese or Mongolian competitors. Some of them may have improve over the years, and they also have some advantage of competing on their home ground, China. (and Mongolia is also near China so they also bring some relatives to support them during the competition)

We also discuss about the WMC-2015 in another memory forum here:
http://mt.artofmemory.com/forums/good-l ... ampionship
where as an outsider, I posted some articles and I estimated the odds/probabilities of all Top-20 mnemonists/competitors in the world.

However, my calculations and estimations of the winning odds of each competitor are not exact, because I don't know all parameters like the personal shape and current form of each individual competitor, or their amount of training. But generally, the calculation of probabilities for the odds of the competitors include: prior WMC experience, current world records, current shape/form, competitors' personal records, and finally the WMC venue (the Chinese may a slight edge for an improved performance due to that, but not enough to make them favourite to win).
Still, Johannes is probably the most favourite to win, but it will be a hard competition because the level of records has increased over the years, and it's tough for most people to make it on the top-5 or top-10.

Also since you guys mentioned Ben here, another guy in the artofmemory forum told me that unfortunately Ben won't participate in WMC-2015. So, later I lowered the chances/odds of UK, due to that fact. Without Ben, the UK is extremely unlikely to breath through in WMC (but I am not sure about Katie's chances).

Also, to anyone going in WMC-2015 and reading this, please consider after WMC of posting your own insider's report/thoughts about WMC, (during Christmas)
because the Media articles about WMC usually don't have many details of what happened. (and some time the scores/rankings don't tell all the details)

Regards and good luck to all participants again!

Nodas, are you able to read German? Just in case I will make this post partly bilingual, but if yes, I won't need to in further posts that also refer to you.

I have made my Top 10 guess yesterday and that's how it looks like:

1. Alex Mullen
2. Johannes Mallow
3. Marwin Wallonius
4. Shi Binbin
5. Lance Tschirhart
6. Sengesamdan Ulziikhutag
7. Simon Reinhard
8. Yanjindulam Altansuh
9. Boris Nikolai Konrad
10. Ola Kare Risa

I hope I'm aware of all participations respectively non-participations.

@Nodas: I looked at your guess. You were mentioning some names I know or assume to be not participating: Jonas von Essen, Wang Feng, Zheng Aiqiang, Ben Pridmore, Christian Schäfer...so about your direct question - Ben is not competing this year, but I don't know why. And Katie will not compete either. Her next appearance will probably be at the XMT in 2016. Marlo Knight will be the top contendor from Great Britain. It seems most likely to me that he'll finish somewhere in between 10-20. If he has a bad day he could end up below Top 20 and on a good day he could make Top 10.

Shi Binbin sagt mir gar nichts. Chinese?

Mein Tipp: 1) Hannes 2) Marvin 3) Simon.

Hello Philodoof
Yes, I can read some German at around A1-A2 level. But with some translators I understand almost all the vocabulary and the discussions here. So keep going and you can reply to me in German in you want. (or in English). But like I said in another post I will always write in English because it feels more natural to me and because I cannot yet write fluently in German. And if I write in German I'll make many grammar mistakes which you will find very funny, that's why I avoid it.

But what ultimately matters is the exchange of information and not the language. Personally, in order to improve in mental calculation (and because there was almost no such information in my native language) I had to read articles not only in English but also in German or French or Russian mainly from Mr. Stepanov' Mnemonic articles: http://stepanov.lk.net/mnemo/mnemoare.html (great site!). I don't focus much on the language, but on the information. And even if this forum is not very comfortable for me (from a language point of view), I think it has great information for learning that why I read your posts (or translate the topics)

Now to stay on topic, I did not know about the exact list of participants. My odds were kind of arbitrary and subject to change . But if what you said is true and those people are absent, then I will now pick the new best 12 favourites to win WMC-2015, with these odds:

(updated 16/Dec/2015 - (outright) Favourites to win WMC 2015):
1. MALLOW Germany Odds: 5/2
2. REINHARD Germany Odds: 3/1
3. WALLONIUS Sweden Odds: 6/1
4. B. N. KONRAD Germany Odds: 7/1
5. S. ULZIIKHUTAG Mongolia Odds: 7/1
6 ALTANSUH Sweden Odds: 10/1
7 O.K. RISA Norway Odds: 10/1
9 T.SAIKHANBAYAR Mongolia Odds: 13/1
10 TSCHIRHART USA Odds:13/1
11 MULLEN USA Odds: 20/1
12 S BINBIN China Odds 20/1 (due to lack of experience)
and "Any Other Competitor" at Odds: 15/1

(obviously with all those cancellations, all odds got a bit lower for everyone who still has winning chances. And these probabilities are only my estimations and predictions)

Also, what you guys mentioned earlier about Ben being the next Tony Buzan, I think we need not only 1, but 10 Tony Buzans. If Tony was 30 or 40 years old he would have more energy and would have done great work for Memory. Right now, I think the main problem on memory and mind sports, that is the lack of global recognition from the mass media. That's strange, because memory skills are very important in almost all jobs and white-collar workforce these days, so such memory champion activities should be higher on the agenda of the mass media. Honestly, I think that even if WMC takes place for 25 years already (since '91) , it still has not reached the recognition what it should be. Yes, in Germany it may be a bit famous, but in other countries (like UK or Spain or Italy or Japan) it is not very big the news or gets any sponsorship deals. But, anyway this big prize of about 150 Thousand Euros given by the Chinese this time, is a good kickstart. But comparing to other sports prizes, that's still not much money. Because Messi in Barca gets 150K Euros in 3 days and he does not even uses many brain cells for that. (and a smart brain is what ultimately makes us humans different than other animals, and not the ability of kicking a football to a net nor huge strength). So, let's hope that human mind sports will gain more recognition in the future.

Finally, about WMC cancellations and non-participations, I think we should not judge anyone for their choice to abstain from the WMC. Maybe they had other priorities this year. It's not like every Top-Mnemonist in the world has an obligation to participate every year. Many people want to have a break or improve in other areas. So, I understand Ben P., Jonas V.E. or Christian S. or Wang Feng. Maybe it's only a break.

That's what this competition is about, to find the best active memory athlete for the year 2015, and not necessarily the best living memory athlete; in the same way that Pele, Beckenbauer or Marodona are still arguably among the best living footballers but not the best active (like Messi). The same may apply for Dr Dr Gunther Karsten, Bell or O'Brien who have left a legacy in memory sports).
So, the winner of WMC 2015 will have the best memory than everyone on the planet this year, but not necessarily better than them in historical comparative terms. That will need consistency and more wins.

Good luck again !!

Nodas, then I will keep my common parts German, as this board is on German and who knows if all of those are able to read English or know how to translate it. But I will stick to write all parts addressed to you in English as long as you don't request German. :-) So I might switch languages every now and then.

I'm not completely sure about everyone I listed either. As I said, some are assumed. Wang Feng for example stopped competing. That's why I assumed him to not compete. But you can't exclude completely that someone will have a comeback. That happens all the time in sports when athletes realize they just miss it too much. But I tried to collect some information about who is competing and who not. I didn't get a final competitor list or something like that. But preliminary lists of non-Chinese competitors and stuff like that. Only from Katie I know it in person.

I'm not judging them for not participating. Usually it's neither the right thing to attend a competition nor is it the wrong thing. It's just a private decision. There may be different circumstances however. I liked it when a lot of good athletes were not competing at the WMC in order to protest against bad and what's even more important inconsiderate Chinese WMC organization.

Are there already any results from China? Now it's 10p.m. in China and on the first day, we have always had the results in the last WMC, so I think it will be the same this year. With the names&faces result we will know much more, who have a chance to win and who won't have a winning chance. Simon needs a good result, because he's very good in names, while Hannes, Marvin, etc. have a problem in this disciplin.

I suppose that the reasons for the good athletes, which will not participate this year, are several. Christian and Annalena are students and their time is not unlimited. Jonas is already a two times World-memory champion and he's a student too and not so good in shape this year. But I suppose, if the WMC would be in Europa, some of the good Europeans would participate, but China is not Europe and definitely not the perfect country to take place a WMC.

Hi guys, I agree about China not being the best place for WMC, because of the huge distance from here in Europe.

But however, the China found some big sponsors and the 150,000 Euros for prizes. That amount of money may have been hard to gather, if the WMC happened in London. I am not sure about Dubai.
Even though, I said that 150K is few compared to football, I think this amount is quite a lot for memory, considering the situation in other mind sports. For example, in 'London Chess Classic 2015' which ended 3 days ago, the overall prizes share was 300K. (only about twice as big as in WMC 2015)

By the way, in London, there is MSO (Mind Sports Olympiad) every August (http://www.msoworld.com/schedule/full-schedule/ with various mind games) but the prizes there are usually very small (few hundred pounds) and in some cases there is even a participation fee for competitors. At least, in many memory competitions and regionals, there is no participation fee.

P.S. To stay on topic, please post any WMC results if you find them
I tried to see in the FB WMC page
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1230770 ... 223095929/ but there is nothing posted there yet

Beeindruckend....

Der Gesamtstand nach Tag 1:
1. Marwin Wallonius 2678
2. Alex Mullen 2647
3. Simon Reinhard 2614
4. Shi Binbin 2412
5. Yanjindulam Altansuh 2298
6. Johannes Mallow 2195
7. Yahia Nasreddine Rassine 2017
8. Chen Yongsong 1909
9. Tsogbadrakh Saikhanbayar 1909
10. Ola Kare Risa 1871
